Have you ever watched a movie where two guys want a girl, but only one of them truly loves her? It’s a war zone of emotion! The guy who loves her most and wants the best for her is forced to stand by and watch as she gives in to the other guy’s advances. Heartache and jealousy occur because the one who loves knows the other isn’t right for her. He knows where she really belongs.
God’s no different. In fact, the Bible says He’s jealous for your love (Exodus 34:14). Your actions grieve Him when He sees your love and affection given to a man who was never meant for you. He wants you devoted to Himself first, so He can bring in a man who will truly love you. Why? Because if you’re born-again Christian, you belong to Jesus—spirit, soul, and body.
Know you not that you are the temple of the Holy Ghost, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you. For you are not your own, for you were bought with a great price. Therefore, glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are His (I Corinthians 6:19, 20).
You’re His! You’re His possession. It didn’t say that you’re some man’s possession or the possession of this amazing dream for marriage. You are first and foremost God’s. Being possessed by God is nothing like a slave who has no privileges and is under the constant guard of his owner, but is more like a treasure whose value is great in the eyes of its owner.
For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth (Deuteronomy 7:6).
God Himself said that you are a special treasure, set apart for Him. He treasures you, values you, and has a purpose for you. No hoarding is involved…only love.
What does a person do with a treasure? Throw it in a tin box and leave it to rust on the garage shelf? Bury it under a pile of who-knows-what-it-is papers from last year’s school assignments? Not by a long shot. Treasure goes somewhere special, safe, and hidden. Long ago, people buried treasure in trunks the size of Texas beneath feet of dirt or in the great recesses of a cave. Only treasure maps, carefully hidden and preserved, could guide the way to finding them. So it is with your hearts. You are God’s special treasure. If man knows how to hide what’s valuable to him, God definitely knows.
For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (Colossians 3:3)
Unlike money-hungry pirates, God’s not hiding your heart out of selfishness. He’s preserving your heart in such a way that you will be protected. As a jealous God, He doesn’t want anyone to plunder what rightfully belongs to Him. Neither is He keeping you from being fulfilled in life. You are “hidden away” in Him so you can be preserved from someone trying to pillage the beauty and dream you possess. It’s for your well-being. He knows what’s best for you.
Some guys out there would like to gain your heart cheaply. They’ll flirt, offer gifts, and pretend to be a gentleman—all in an effort to attain your affections. Some guys who pursue may be great, but are not for you. That’s why having your hearts safely in God’s hands is so important. When God holds your heart, no one can steal it away. It’s locked for someone who’s close enough to God to find the key.
